Bears & the Big Tree Trail

Explore the magical Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Reserve where you can see black bears up close. The protected waters of the Sound offer incredible coastline for viewing black bears, eagles, seals and other wildlife. Next, step ashore and explore the Wanachus/Hilthuuis (Meares Island) Tribal Park, home to some of the oldest red cedars in British Columbia on an interpretive rainforest walk along the Big Tree Trail. If you are interested in a private experience, private groups up to 4 guests will cruise the fjords on our covered aluminum vessel. Larger group of more than 5 guests will charter our open zodiac.

  • You will rendezvous with your guide at Storm Light Outfitters Tofino. Here we will depart by boat into Clayoquot Sound. These details will be discussed during the booking process.
  • Departure times vary daily to coincide with the low tide for optional chances for bear viewing.
  • We will search for wildlife by zodiac throughout Clayoquot Sound
  • And we will walk in the ancient rainforest of Meares Island on the Big Tree Trail

Introductory

  • To determine the grade of a particular adventure we consider a number of factors. These include the condition of the terrain and length of the trip. If your tour is graded introductory, no previous hiking experience is required and you can expect 2-4 hours of physical activity. These walks utilize well formed trails, boardwalks, beaches and in general are up to half day in duration. For you to be able to really enjoy this trip we recommend that you are to walk comfortably for a few hours at a time (with breaks included).
  • Suitable for all ages.
  • In an open boat like this, you get close to the elements. Our drivers have a high focus on safety and ensure a comfortable ride. *Children need to be over 40KG (88lbs) to ride in the open zodiac. If you child is under 40KG (88lbs) we recommend booking our private tour which is in our covered vessel.*
  • In its entirety, the trip takes 4 hours, and we have daily departures from April to October.
  • If you are pregnant or have back problems, you are recommended other experiences.
  • Dress in warm clothes in several layers (long pants, long shirt, sweater or jacket).
  • Bring your own mittens, gloves, shoes according to the conditions
  • A buff / scarf no matter the weather when you go out in an open boat.
  • We recommend you bring a camera of course!
  • It’s also a good idea to pack sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and a snack!
  • We ask that you please bring your own reusable water bottle – we’re working to reduce plastic waste. Did you know that Tofino has some of the cleanest and freshest tap water in the world? Our fresh water supply comes from Colnett Mountain on the beautiful Meares Island. If you don’t have a bottle of your own; Reusable Bottles are available for purchase at our Storm Light Outfitter’s Booking Office along with a variety of outdoor gear.
  • To add to our guests’ comfort, we provide two-piece Helly Hansen waterproof sailing suits plus binoculars. The two-piece suits are much easier to get in and out of than the traditional one-piece suits used by most companies.
