ACTIVITY RATINGS
Our rating system is based on a 5 level scale starting at “light” and onwards to "advanced”. No rating system, including ours, is perfect and is inevitably based on subjective judgements. To determine the grade of a particular adventure we consider a number of factors. These include the condition of the terrain and the length of the trip etc. Please use this system as a guideline and if in doubt, start on a lower difficulty trip.
Light
Travelers should be in good health and comfortable sitting in an open boat for extended periods of time. Given the dynamic nature of sea conditions and the rapid fluctuations in daily weather forecasts, you should be prepared for a variety of conditions. You will need enough mobility to get in and out of a boat and walk comfortably for 30 min - 1 hour. *Hot Springs Cove - Exercise caution at all times and move slowly and deliberately when entering and exiting the natural geothermal pools in Maquinna Provincial Park. The terrain is uneven, rocky and slippery. Rocks can shift underfoot, leading to falls, sprains, or other injuries. We highly recommend that you have water shoes or sandals with excellent grip instead of attempting bare feet.
Easy
If your tour is rated “Easy”, no previous outdoor experience is required but you can expect 1-3 hours of physical activity. These walks utilize well formed trails, boardwalks, beaches and in general these tours are up to a half day duration. While this tour is rated as easy, please be aware that natural conditions can change rapidly. Weather, and trail maintenance can affect the level of ease or difficulty. Always exercise caution and preparedness. Remember that every outdoor adventure is a chance to connect with nature, stay active, and create lasting memories. We hope you enjoy your hike along this easy-rated trail and have a safe, enjoyable experience.
Moderate
If your tour is rated as “Moderate”, you will need a reasonable level of fitness. While it may not be as strenuous as difficult or advanced trails, it still involves some elevation changes that may pose a challenge to individuals with certain health conditions. You will need to be able to walk for 3-4 hours at a time on undulating paths. Most of the trails are hard packed sand, uneven boardwalks and rain forest trails. You will receive instructions and a full briefing by your experienced hiking guide before you set off. Contend with occasional steep section but primarily gradual. Few hazards such as uneven terrain, roots, creek crossings and slippery rocks. Good mobility is required. These tours will take place in remote locations and may require debarking from boat onto rocky shoreline or beach. By choosing to hike on a trail with a moderate rating, you acknowledge and accept the risks associated with outdoor activities.
