The Best of Pacific Rim

The Pacific Rim Coast Trail features a series of four stunning beaches and five interconnected trails that showcase the region's most captivating natural features. From rugged shorelines and lush temperate rainforests to expansive views of the Pacific Ocean, this hike delivers unforgettable moments at every turn. Here’s an overview of the trail, starting at Willowbrae trailhead near Wya Point Resort: 1. Willowbrae Trail and Halfmoon BayThe adventure begins amid a forest of towering western hemlock, Sitka spruce, and western red cedar. As you descend toward the secluded Halfmoon Bay, you’re enveloped by the serene beauty of the rainforest. This tranquil beach is the perfect spot for a warm-up break, where the sound of waves sets the tone for the journey ahead. 2. South Florencia Bay (South Flo)Continuing north, the trail leads to the dramatic cliffs of an ancient glacial moraine at South Flo. Here, keep an eye out for gray whales, often seen migrating along the coastline. The scenic vistas of Florencia Bay offers a harmonious blend of ocean views and rugged terrain. 3. Nuu-chah-nulth Boardwalk and South BeachA highlight of the hike is the Nuu-chah-nulth boardwalk, which winds through unique ecosystems featuring carnivorous plants and twisted shore pines. South Beach, a wild and windswept stretch of coastline, is an excellent spot to pause for lunch. Surrounded by jagged bluffs, it’s a testament to the timeless battle between land and sea. 4. Wickaninnish Bay and Kwistis Visitor CentreAs you approach Wickaninnish Bay, take a moment to visit the Kwistis Visitor Centre. This hub offers exhibits on the land, sea, and sky, as well as insights into the Indigenous cultures of the area. Refuel your water bottle, explore the beach, and prepare for the final stretch. 5. Combers Beach and the Trail’s EndThe final section of the hike crosses Wickaninnish Beach and its rolling dunes before leading back into the forest on the Combers Beach trail. This last stretch is a fitting finale, offering a peaceful conclusion to an unforgettable day.

Tips for Hiking the Pacific Rim Coast Trail

  • Plan Ahead: Pack plenty of water, snacks, and appropriate gear. Weather can change quickly in this coastal region. There are 2 creek crossings along this route, so know the tides and prepare yourself. This is also a “thru-hike” so the end of the trail is a different location than the start. A shuttle is required.
  • Respect Nature: Stay on marked trails and carry out all garbage to preserve the ecosystem.
  • Check for Wildlife: From gray whales to sea birds, the trail offers abundant opportunities to spot local wildlife.

Tofino Activities Beyond the Trail
